Welcome to the Yachts in Transit email system (YIT). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With this system you can keep up to date with weather forecasts, weather reports, radio nets, blogs, diving locations, snorkeling locations and friends. The more people that use the system the more beneficial it will be for everyone. An important feature of the system is when given a GPS location, the system will retrieve weather reports, blogs and/or diving and snorkeling locations within a user defined number of miles of the given position. Very useful. Use the examples below by copying and pasting them into your email program. Change the details to refelect your account details. Just a quick note about the gps position which can be entered with two different tags. [position], this is useful across multiple commands such as [status], [weather], [blog] and the other ":position" tag is used inside these commands where the positions maybe different from each other eg: [status] :position 24 35.456e 175 23.567s Today we arrived in Savu Savu [diving] :position 21 35.456e 172 23.567s :title crazy reef Totally crazy diving spot with so much life going on ........... -----------------------------------------Yahcts in Transit Common usage------------------------------------------- Replace any capitals with your account details such as MYPASSWD and BOATNAME with your password for the system and your boatname you registered with. An important feature of the system is when given a GPS location, the system will retrieve weather reports, blogs and/or diving and snorkeling locations within a user defined number of miles of the given position. Very useful. ---------------------------------------------------Getting Started-------------------------------------------------- To get started, you need to register. Send an email to register@yit.co.nz with your yacht name as the subject, a password, and a nice description of your yacht using the following commands: [register] :password (choose something you will remember easily) Example: email: register@yit.co.nz subject: Mirabilis [register] :password hondaXR250 (choose something you will remember) Mirabilis is a nice, flush deck, monohull steel yacht with a sloop rig. She was built in Whangerei in 1987 and lived most of her life in the Nelson NZ area. She ventured to the islands for the first time last year (2012) and performed extremely well. Her current owners ..... That's it you're now registered. Carry on below to learn how the system works. If you're impatient, you can just use the examples provided as a quick template. These are located at the bottom of this help email. Note: Your password is only needed for sending information into the system, such as blogs, diving locations etc. -------------------------------------How the system works---------------------------------------------- The way the system works is by emailing either a "get" or "send" request to the system. A "get" consists of things like get weather or get blogs and a "send" consists of things like send weather or send blog or send diving. You formulate your email as the following "get" example shows. I want to get all blog titles in the last 45 days. email: get@yit.co.nz subj: no subject required [blog] 45 And that's all you need to do. What comes back is a list of all the blogs that have been submitted in the last 45 days eg. Running the gauntlet :295 . To receive the blog(s) you want, you will use the blog ID which appears in the form :295. email get@yit.co.nz subject: no subject required [blogs] :295 :314 :22 This returns three blogs for reading. Now you have a basic understanding of the format for the emails you can go ahead and find the section below for what you want to do and start enjoying the system. Dive and snorkel locations are a good way to start sharing with others the great places you enjoyed. After all, we didn't sail 5000 miles to do average walks, diving and snorkeling. ----------------------Quick Start------------------------------------------------------------- ------------- Step 1 ------------- Register by sending an email in the exact format as follows, substituting your own values. email: register@yit.co.nz subject: Mirabilis [register] :password hondaXR250 (choose something you will remember) :description Mirabilis is a nice flush deck, monohull steel yacht with a sloop rig. She was built in Whangerei in 1987 and lived most of her life in the Nelson NZ area. She ventured to the islands for the first time last year (2012) and performed extremely well. Her current owners ..... ------------- Step 3 ------------- Get some weather for Fiji, South West Pacific and any weather updates from yachts nearby. email get@yit.co.nz subject: [position] 21 34S 175 35E [weather]100 :fiji :fiji-towns :swpacific [diving] :position 21 45.22s 173 34.89e :title Grand Central Amazing diving, lots of sharks and big palegic fish. Great wall, basin and coral structures. [diving] :position 21 45.66s 173 34.77e :title Twin Peaks Two amazing coral towers with plenty of life on the top and activety down below. Look for the blue worm SE corner at 12m. [snorkeling] :position 21 44.66s 173 33.77e :title Whale paradise Drifting along the outer edge of the reef the coral garden is spectacular and with whales just hanging off. Totally amazing. ------------- Step 6 (Optional) ------------- Get diving and snorkling locations with 50 miles and any weather updates from other yachts. email get@yit.co.nz subject: [position] 21 34S 175 35E [diving]50 [snorkeling] 50 [weather]100 And thats it, your fully up and running. As long as you stick to the above formats the system should be easy to use. ----------------------------------------------- GET------------------- The get email address is used to retrieve the information you want from the system by sending an email to get@yit.co.nz with no subject. Allowed tags: [weather] [blogs] [diving] [snorkeling] [position] [position] 22 45s 175 34.4e This sets the system location to where you require. Any weather reports, blogs, diving, snorkeling or friends nearby will be retrieved based on this position. Set the position you require information for at the beginning of your "get" email. ---------------- [weather] ---------------- You can retrieve weather information from forecasts and/or yacht reports. For yacht reports the [position] tag must have been set. To retrieve yacht reports in a 100 mile radius use the following. [position] 22 45s 175 34.4e [weather]100 (Returns all yacht weather reports in a 100 mile radius.) The following retrieves the current weather forecast reports. You can have as many as you like, each separated by a new line. No position tag is required to be set in the email. Below is the full list of weather forecast reports available at the present time. For new weather forecasts, please email mike@ore.co.nz and it will be included if possible. [weather] :tonga (gets tonga marine) :fiji (gets fiji marine) :fiji-towns (gets fiji-towns) :pacific (gets pacific high seas from the NZ metservice) :niue :kiribati :nauru :tuvalu :cookis :swpacific (from Fiji metservice) :subtropic (from NZ metservice) ---------------- [blogs] ---------------- Blogs can be too large to receive too many at once so you will need to follow two steps. First find the titles you like the sound of, and then request those specific blogs. There are two options for retrieving lists of blog titles. The first is using a time period for which you wish to receive blogs. For example: [blogs] 45 (this will return titles of any blog posted in the last 45 days) The second option is using distance; this must be used with the [position] tag set at the beginning of the email. For example: [position] 21 34S 175 35E [blogs] distance: 150 (this will return titles of any blogs posted within 150 miles of the set location) When you know which blogs you wish to retrieve, use the blog IDs (preceded by a colon) that you received when using either of the above methods. Multiple blogs can be requested at once. For example: [blogs]:259 :314 ---------------- [diving] ---------------- Dive site locations can be requested for within a specified number of miles of a given position. For example: [position] 22 45s 175 34e [diving] 100 (Returns all diving locations with their descriptions within 100 miles of the given position.) ---------------- [snorkeling] ---------------- GET [snorkeling] Snorkeling site locations can be requested for within a specified number of miles of a given position. For example: [position] 22 45s 175 34e [snorkeling] 100 (Returns all diving snorkeling with their descriptions within 100 miles of the given position.) That is all there is to the GET command. Please refer to the indepth examples at the bottom of this help email for different variations possible using the above tags. -------------------------------------------------SEND------------- The send email address is used to submit the information you want into the system by sending an email to send@yit.co.nz with your yacht name (as provided when you registered) in the subject line. This is important! Allowed tags: [password] [gulfharbour] [weather] [status] [blog] [diving] [snorkeling] [position] Your password is required in all send emails, this verifies that you are the author. Your password is the one you registered with. To enter your password use the following format: [password] yourpassword A specified position is used for weather, blogs, diving, snorkeling and walking. For example: [position] 22 45s 175 34.4e ------------- [status] ------------- Status sends a little status update to the site, facebook and your friends. You can add any number of them. If using multiple you need to set the :position tag inside the status. Useful for mapping the journey so far. [password] MYPASSWD [position] 22 45s 175 34.4e [status] We have just moved from Savusavu down to the Namena Island marine protected area for diving. OR Allowing for two status updates, updating two points to the map with statuses. NEWEST to OLDEST. [password] MYPASSWD [status] :position 22 45s 175 34.4e We have just moved from Savusavu down to the Namena Island marine protected area for diving. [status] :position 21 45s 173 34.4e On our way to Savusavu in Fiji from Wallis & Futuna, we'll miss this place! ------------- [weather ------------- Requires [position] tag to have been set. Add a weather update to your location. Other yachts may find this useful if in your general vicinity. [password] MYPASSWD [postiion] 21 45s 173 34.4e [weather] Seas building to 3m from the south. 25knts from the SSE gusting 35Knts. Front moving in from the East. ------------- [diving] ------------- Adds a diving location to the system. Other yachts can then retrieve these positions by sending an email to get@yit.co.nz. If all diving yachts enter their diving locations this will make a very useful diving database for cruisers. [password] MYPASSWD [diving] :position 21 45.974s 173 34.427e :title Grand Central Amazing diving, lots of sharks and big pelagic fish cruising by. Great wall, basin and coral structures. Look for the blue ribbon eel in the SE corner at 12m. ------------- [snorkeling] ------------- Exactly the same as diving except with the [snorkeling] tag. ---------------- [blog] ---------------- To send in a blog you only need the blog title and the blog body. You can also choose to supply a position which the blog will be tagged to making it useful to other cruisers who might be visiting your location. [password] MYPASSWD [position] 21 45.66s 173 34.77e [blog] :title Staying with the island warrior.
