This site is representative of the habitats found along this coast. Rocky intertidal platforms have channels running through them , rocky reefs are covered in a variety of seaweeds to 10 metres below which large kelp forests dominate to about 20 metres.
Aquatic Life:
Kina are common here as are rock lobster which can be seen in the many crevices and overhangs. This reserve is best known for its rock lobsters which have responded to protection so well that they can be seen out in the open in very shallow water. Sponges, hydroids, anemones, soft corals and sea squirts all thrive on the rock faces and overhangs.
Fish species include spotties, banded wrasse, scarlet wrasse, red moki, hiwihiwi, butterfish, marblefish, parore, scorpionfish, sweep and leatherjackets.
Warnings:
This site is a marine reserve. All life and natural features are totally protected. It is illegal to take, disturb, kill or damage anything within the reserve and anyone who commits an offence may be subject to a fine of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment. It is also an offence to pollute or litter the reserve, discharge any firearm in or into the reserve or erect any structure in the reserve.
Directions:
From Gisborne take State Highway 35 heading east out of town. Follow the road (Whangara Rd) along the coast heading north through Tatapouri to Pouawa where the only road access is to the reserve. From Gisborne to Pouawa is 19kms. The nearest boat ramp is located at Tatapouri.
