Destination: Apia, Samoa
Introduction
Apia is the capital of independent Samoa (Western Samoa), situated on the north coast of Upolu island. It is a charming Pacific capital with an authentic fa'a Samoa (Samoan way of life) culture, handsome colonial-era buildings, and a warm hospitality that makes it one of the most welcoming ports in the Pacific. The harbour is sheltered by a reef and provides a good base for exploring Upolu and the neighbouring island of Savai'i.

Protected Anchorages
The main anchorage for visiting yachts is in Apia Harbour inside the reef, in 5–12 m over sand and mud. The harbour entrance has a rock awash (Palolo Rock) — use the well-marked western channel. Apia is exposed to northerly swells which can penetrate the anchorage and cause a surge. The preferred berth in bad weather is stern-to the Aggie Grey's Lagoon jetty or on the Samoa Yacht Club's pontoons.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
Apia is Samoa's Port of Entry. Customs and Immigration offices are near the main wharf. Pre-arrival notification is not mandatory but helpful. Biosecurity Samoa inspects food stores — fresh produce, meat, and honey are regulated. A cruising permit or letter from customs is advisable for travel to Savai'i.
