Destination: Taveuni, Fiji
Introduction
Taveuni is Fiji's Garden Island — the third-largest in the archipelago and arguably its most biologically spectacular, draped in dense tropical rainforest that receives prodigious rainfall feeding hundreds of waterfalls, rivers, and endemic plant communities. The island straddles the 180th meridian and is world-renowned for the diving in the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu, particularly the legendary Rainbow Reef with its Great White Wall and Rainbow Passage — consistently rated among the top five dive sites globally. Strong tidal currents through the Strait require careful timing but reward the patient sailor with drift dives through extraordinary soft coral gardens.

Protected Anchorages
The principal anchorage for visiting yachts is off Waiyevo on the western coast in 8–15 m over sand and mud — reasonable holding in a generally sheltered position. Matei in the north of the island has a small wharf and anchorage in 6–10 m, more exposed but convenient for the airport. Vuna Lagoon on the southern tip offers good shelter in 4–8 m over sand in northeast conditions. The Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu carries strong tidal currents reaching 4–5 knots at springs — plan passages to transit with the current and at slack water for the best diving.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
No customs clearance facility on Taveuni. A valid Fijian cruising permit obtained at Suva, Savusavu, or Lautoka is required before visiting. Taveuni is a natural extension from Savusavu (approximately 65 nm to the west) and most vessels combine the two destinations. Fuel and provisioning are limited — carry adequate stocks from Savusavu.
