Destination: Picton (Marlborough Sounds), New Zealand
Introduction
Picton, at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound in the Marlborough Sounds, is the South Island's gateway to one of the world's truly great cruising grounds. The Marlborough Sounds comprise over 1,500 km of sheltered, drowned river valleys clothed in native bush, where remote bays, wildlife-rich waters, and historic anchorages reward weeks of unhurried exploration. Beyond Queen Charlotte Sound, the equally spectacular Kenepuru Sound and the deep, wild Pelorus Sound extend the cruising ground into genuinely remote territory accessible only by water.

Protected Anchorages
Queen Charlotte Sound has outstanding anchorages throughout its 40 km length: Endeavour Inlet (where Cook careened Resolution and Adventure) in 5–10 m over mud with excellent holding; Bay of Many Coves in 8–12 m; and Punga Cove in 6–10 m — all well sheltered from all directions. Kenepuru Sound rewards those who venture further with quiet coves at Portage and Double Bay in 5–8 m over mud. Pelorus Sound is deeper and wilder, with anchorages at Clova Bay (6–12 m), Tennyson Inlet (8–15 m), and the spectacular Nydia Bay. Most Sounds anchorages offer excellent mud holding and near-complete shelter from all wind directions once inside.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
Picton is not a designated Port of Entry for international arrivals — clearance must be completed at Wellington before transiting Cook Strait. Domestic-flagged vessels and internationally cleared yachts use Picton freely. Picton Marina on VHF 16 manages visitor berths in the inner harbour. Havelock, 35 km by road into the Sounds, has a marina offering a quieter base for Pelorus and Kenepuru exploration.
