Destination: Madang, Papua New Guinea
Introduction
Madang on PNG's north coast is widely considered the most beautiful town in the Pacific — a lushly tropical port draped in frangipani and hibiscus, set on a peninsula surrounded by lagoons and islands. It is also one of the world's premier diving destinations, with extraordinary underwater visibility, superb coral walls, and numerous WWII wrecks in the harbour and nearby. The town has a relaxed, colonial-era pace and a welcoming expatriate community.

Protected Anchorages
The main anchorage is in the lagoon off Madang town, in 5–15 m over sand and coral — good holding and excellent shelter. Sek Island anchorage and Kranket Lagoon across from the main harbour are beautiful and quieter options. The approach to Madang requires careful navigation through the reef passages — Dallman Passage and Astrolabe Bay provide the main routes. Winds in Astrolabe Bay can be confused during the transition between monsoon seasons.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
Madang is a Port of Entry for PNG. Customs and Immigration officials attend at the main wharf. Vessels can also clear at Port Moresby, Kavieng, or Alotau. A cruising permit is required. Biosecurity PNG inspects all stores.
