Destination: Darwin, Australia
Introduction
Darwin, the capital of Australia's Northern Territory, is the launching pad for one of offshore sailing's most exciting passages — the 1,700 nm route to Bali via Kupang, West Timor, through some of the most dramatic seascapes in the world. The city sits at the top of a vast, shallow harbour on the edge of the Timor Sea, making it the gateway between Australia and maritime Southeast Asia. The sailing season is tightly defined by the tropical climate: the dry season from May to October brings reliable south-easterly trades, manageable seas, and the perfect window for departure. The wet season (November–April) brings cyclone risk, oppressive humidity, and dangerous lightning — most cruising boats are well south or in a cyclone hole by November. Darwin is a vibrant, multicultural frontier city with a strong sailing community, excellent provisioning, and a famous sunset market culture.

Protected Anchorages
Cullen Bay Marina (Lock 1) is the premier visitor marina in Darwin, accessed through a tidal lock — contact on VHF Ch 16; lock operates around high water. Fuel, power, water, and excellent facilities including a chandlery and restaurants on the marina precinct. Tipperary Waters Marina (inland) is another option. Darwin Sailing Club at Fannie Bay has visitor berths and a well-regarded social scene — call on VHF Ch 77. Anchorage in Darwin Harbour is available east of the deep-water channel off Casuarina and Fannie Bay in 4–8 metres over sand and mud; tidal range is 7–8 metres (springs) so anchoring technique and scope are critical — use a tidal graph and set generous scope. Mandorah anchorage on the western harbour shore (4–6 m) is quieter. Shoal Bay and Bynoe Harbour south of Darwin offer remote anchorages for exploration of the Territory coastline. Check crocodile status — saltwater crocodiles are present throughout Darwin Harbour; swimming is strongly discouraged.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
Darwin is a full international port of entry and the principal departure port for Indonesia. Australian Border Force (ABF) clearance is handled at Cullen Bay Marina — contact ABF in advance for arrival formalities. Outward clearance for Indonesia requires a ship's papers package: clearance certificate, crew list (exact passport details), and vessel registration. Obtain an Indonesian CAIT (Clearance Approval for Indonesian Territory) or KITAS permit in advance via a Darwin-based agent — it takes several weeks and is mandatory for cruising Indonesian waters. The Darwin-based sailing community and SSCA (Seven Seas Cruising Association) bulletin boards are excellent resources for current entry requirements.
