Destination: Sydney, Australia
Introduction
Sydney Harbour — Port Jackson — is one of the finest natural harbours in the world and Australia's premier sailing destination. Stretching 20 kilometres inland from the ocean entrance at North Head and South Head, the harbour offers sheltered water, dramatic sandstone headlands, and some of the world's most iconic urban scenery: the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, and thousands of yachts at anchor or under sail on any given weekend. The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), home of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, sits on the southern foreshore at Rushcutters Bay — a focal point of Australian offshore sailing culture. The harbour and its surrounding waterways — including Pittwater, Broken Bay, and the Hawkesbury River — provide weeks of coastal cruising within easy reach of a world-class city.

Protected Anchorages
Rushcutters Bay, immediately east of the CBD, is the main cruising hub with CYCA marina berths (call ahead on VHF Ch 72) and good anchorage in 4–7 metres over mud — some swell penetrates in easterlies. Watsons Bay on the south shore near South Head offers excellent shelter in prevailing nor'easters in 3–5 metres over sand and mud; land at the public jetty. Rose Bay has a public mooring field and anchorage in 3–5 metres — convenient for the city by ferry. Quarantine Bay (Manly Cove side) is a quiet overnight stop in 4–6 metres, good holding in mud. Middle Harbour offers superb gunkholing: Sugarloaf Bay, Sailors Bay, and Bantry Bay all provide shelter in 4–8 metres over mud with good holding. Pittwater, 30 nm north via Broken Bay, is a world-class cruising ground: anchor at The Basin in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park (2–4 m, sand) or among 50+ mooring buoys managed by the park. Scotland Island anchorage is popular in 3–6 metres. All NSW coastal anchorages are subject to overnight limits in some areas — check local signage. Contact Sydney VTS on VHF Ch 13 when transiting the main harbour shipping channel.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
Sydney is a major international port of entry. Yachts arriving from overseas must contact Australian Border Force (ABF) and report to the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay or the dedicated small-craft arrival facility. Pre-arrival reporting is mandatory via the Australian Border Force SmartGate or by contacting ABF on VHF Ch 16 within 12 nm of the coast. Biosecurity Australia (DAFF) inspections are rigorous — declare all food, plant material, soil, and animal products. Failure to declare attracts heavy fines. International clearance can also be obtained at Cairns, Darwin, Thursday Island, Fremantle, or other designated ports of entry. Cruising domestic waters requires no further customs formalities.
