Destination: Fremantle, Australia
Introduction
Fremantle sits at the mouth of the Swan River on Western Australia's Indian Ocean coast, 20 km south of Perth and linked to the city by a 25-minute suburban train. For ocean passage makers, Fremantle is the western gateway — the last major port before the 2,800 nm passage to Cocos Keeling and Rodrigues, or the first landfall after the Southern Ocean approach from Cape Town or the Southern Ocean itself. The city has an easy-going, café-rich character built on limestone and convict history, and a sailing culture that hosted the America's Cup in 1987. The famous Fremantle Doctor — a reliable afternoon sea breeze averaging 15–25 knots from the south-west — blows almost every summer afternoon, making the local racing intense and exhilarating. Rottnest Island, just 20 nm offshore, is a superb day-sail or overnight stop.

Protected Anchorages
Fremantle Sailing Club (FSC) at Challenger Harbour is the main visitor berth facility — call VHF Ch 77 for availability; full marina services with fuel, chandlery, and refit capability. The FSC has reciprocal arrangements with many overseas clubs. Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club (RFBYC) at Mosman Park on the Swan River (12 km upriver) has visitor berths in a more sheltered environment. Anchorage off Fremantle's north mole outside Challenger Harbour is possible in settled conditions in 5–8 metres over sand, but exposed to the southwesterly swell. Rottnest Island (20 nm west-northwest): Thomson Bay has a boat pens and anchorage in 3–6 metres over sand; it gets crowded on summer weekends. Geordie Bay on the south side is quieter in northerly conditions (3–5 m, sand). Little Parakeet Bay and Longreach Bay on the north coast offer day anchorages in settled conditions. The Fremantle Doctor arrives reliably between 1200 and 1400 in summer — plan coastal passages accordingly and allow for 20–30 knot acceleration zones off headlands.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
Fremantle is a full international port of entry. Yachts arriving from overseas must contact Australian Border Force (ABF) at Victoria Quay — call Fremantle VTS on VHF Ch 16 for instructions on approach. The port handles both commercial shipping and yachts; yachts use the small-craft facilities at the inner harbour. Pre-arrival notification is mandatory 96 hours in advance via the ABF online system. Biosecurity (DAFF) inspections apply — all food and organic material must be declared. Outward clearance for Indian Ocean passages to Cocos Keeling, Réunion, or South Africa is straightforward and can be arranged at FSC.
