Destination: Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
Introduction
Ha Long Bay is one of the natural wonders of the world — a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising some 1,600 limestone karst islands and islets rising from the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin in northern Vietnam. The karst scenery is extraordinary: towers, arches, caves, and floating fishing villages spread across 1,500 square kilometres of sheltered water that, at its best, mirrors the islands in glassy calm. The bay is famous among travellers for its traditional wooden junk cruises, and for private yachts the experience is even more remarkable — the ability to anchor in a hidden cove, kayak into a sea cave, or take a swim in waters that the day-tripper junks can't reach. Vietnam's yachting regulations require that foreign-flagged vessels be accompanied by a licensed local agent and obtain permits through provincial maritime authorities; these requirements, while bureaucratic, are manageable and well-trodden by experienced agents. Ha Long is best visited November through April to avoid the summer typhoon season and summer haze.

Protected Anchorages
The principal anchorage and clearance point is Hon Gai Harbour near Ha Long City, in 5–12 metres over good holding mud. The city waterfront has fuel and provisions. Cat Ba Island, 20 nm southwest, is the most popular overnight anchorage for cruising yachts: Cat Ba Town harbour has a small quay and anchoring in the bay in 4–8 metres over mud is straightforward; the surrounding Cat Ba National Park is beautiful hiking territory. Hang Trong (Drum Cave) anchorage near the entrance to Tung Sau Passage in 8–15 metres is used by visiting junks and yachts. Vung Vieng floating fishing village has a dedicated mooring area for visiting boats; the village chief manages access. The bay's southern sectors — Bai Tu Long Bay to the northeast — are less trafficked than the main Ha Long zones and equally spectacular; several protected anchorages in 6–15 metres are available among the islands.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
Vietnam's maritime regulations for foreign private yachts are complex and have changed repeatedly. The current standard requirement is that foreign yachts must use a licensed local agent who holds the relevant permits, enters the vessel in the national maritime system, and accompanies the cruise or is available by phone. Entry ports for north Vietnam include Hai Phong (the main commercial port 60 nm west) and Hon Gai (Ha Long City). The Vietnam Maritime Administration (VINAMARINE) issues cruising permits for specific routes and dates. Advance planning of 4–6 weeks is advisable; reputable agents in Ha Long and Hanoi can expedite the process. Crew visas must be arranged in advance — e-visa is available for 80+ nationalities for 90-day stays. Customs clearance is formal; all paperwork must be in order before entry into Vietnamese waters.
