Satellite Imagery Interpretation

Satellite imagery is a useful source of analysis for the oceanic regions in the southern hemisphere, particularly in data sparse areas. The following is a compilation from various sources to help the beginning user interpret images from polar orbiting satellites. This guide is not all encompassing but should provide enough information of the basics to enhance the interpretation. An attempt will be made to recognize surface flow, cloud patterns and for locating 1000-500 mb troughs and ridges.

First day at sea almost complete. Mixed bag of motoring in 0.9 kts of wind, motor sailing in 5 kts of wind and screaming along with the wind in the low 20 kts. Heavy rain in squalls. Just had a private airshow from a helicopter from the nearby fishing fleet.

Should make Newcastle today but ETA after Borders closes at 4pm. Received Rick Shema's Update #2 Thursday evening. Rick's forecast is good news for the last 85nm into port, executive summary is winds 15-25kn NE - NNE seas 1.3 to 2.2. and we should be tethered to Quarantine Buoy before the next cold front passes early Friday morning.
