Good spot to access the stunning Rakiura Track with options of a jetty or beach landing. You can make the short walk over to Maori Beach (easy 2 hour return with a bit of time to explore, it has lovely inlets at both ends and an old saw mill historic site at the eastern end), or carry on to Lee Bay where the track starts for a longer four hour return walk.

Historic site and short walk. Foundations and remains from the old whaling repair station that serviced vessels hunting in the Southern Ocean. Huge ice-damaged props litter the beach.

An open island sanctuary with fabulous bird and plant life, including rare mohua (yellow-heads) and tieke (saddle backs). Access easy walking tracks from Sydney Cove. Walks range from ten minutes to two hours. Booklets with information on the island's history and nature are available from DOC or in the interpretation shed at Sydney Cove for just $2.

Dinghy to shore at this beach to access a loop track to Ocean Beach where kiwi can be spotted feeding in the sand at dawn and dusk. If you want to be ashore after 6pm or before 6am you need a permit from DOC as this is a kiwi protection zone. We went ashore at 6am in February and spotted kiwi as soon as we crossed over to Ocean Beach (just 5 minutes from this landing site). The loop track says one hour but is much shorter if you aren't stopping to watch kiwi. The track can also be accessed from a wharf which the tourist boats use.
