Destination: Lautoka, Fiji
Introduction
Lautoka is Fiji's second-largest city and its sugar capital, spread along the northwest coast of Viti Levu at the foot of the Koroyanitu Range with views across to the Mamanuca Islands. As the westernmost Port of Entry on the main island, it is the natural first landfall for yachts arriving from Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, or Australia via the Coral Sea, and offers a more relaxed and authentically Fijian city experience than the more tourist-oriented areas around Nadi. The substantial Indo-Fijian population brings excellent curry houses, markets, and a distinct cultural character.

Protected Anchorages
The Lautoka commercial harbour has a designated small-craft anchorage area in the southern part of the harbour in 5–10 m over mud — adequate holding but noisy and busy with commercial traffic. Vuda Point Marina, approximately 10 km south along the coast and approached through a well-marked passage in the reef, is strongly preferred for visiting yachts and offers far superior facilities and a quieter setting. Anchorage is also possible in the lee of Bekana Island just north of the harbour in 3–6 m over sand in settled southeast trade conditions. The reef passages into Lautoka require detailed chartwork and a careful watch.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
Lautoka is a designated Port of Entry. Fly the Q flag and contact Lautoka Port Authority on VHF 16 before entering the harbour. Customs and Immigration attend at the commercial wharf. Biosecurity Fiji inspects food stores — declare all meat, fresh produce, dairy, and plant material. Cruising permits for outer island travel are issued here. Vuda Point Marina can co-ordinate customs attendance at the marina for an additional clearance fee.
