Destination: Musket Cove, Fiji
Introduction
Musket Cove on Malolo Lailai Island is one of the legendary anchorages of the South Pacific cruising circuit — a sailors' paradise in the heart of the Mamanuca Islands where the lagoon anchorage is sheltered, the reef diving is spectacular, and the yacht club has welcomed cruisers with cold beer and rum punch for decades. The annual Musket Cove Regatta in September has been drawing yachts from across the Pacific for over 30 years, and the combination of superb natural setting, relaxed atmosphere, and genuine sailor camaraderie makes this the single stop most cruising sailors remember most fondly from a Fijian passage.

Protected Anchorages
The lagoon anchorage at Musket Cove is in 4–8 m over sand and scattered coral — anchor in designated sand patches to avoid coral damage, which is both ecologically important and necessary for good holding. The resort provides mooring buoys at a modest daily fee for vessels preferring not to anchor. The passage to Malolo Lailai via Malolo Passage or Navula Passage requires careful navigation — approach only in good light with polarised sunglasses and a crew member stationed forward as lookout. Coral heads are scattered throughout the approaches and are not comprehensively charted. The lagoon anchorage is well-sheltered from the prevailing southeast trade winds.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
No customs facilities at Musket Cove. International arrivals must clear into Fiji at Lautoka or Port Denarau before visiting. The resort staff are experienced with visiting yachts and can assist with cruising permit extensions, provisioning orders, and local knowledge. Contact the marina on VHF 16 for arrival information.
