Destination: Port Vila, Vanuatu
Introduction
Port Vila, on the island of Efate, is the capital and main port of Vanuatu — a Melanesian archipelago of 80 islands stretching 1,300 km in the southwest Pacific. The harbour is deep, well-sheltered, and set against a backdrop of green hills and colonial-era buildings. Port Vila is the main provisioning, clearance, and service port for the entire archipelago and is a key waypoint on south Pacific cruising routes between New Caledonia and Fiji or the Torres Strait.

Protected Anchorages
Vila Bay is the main anchorage, directly in front of the town, in 10–20 m over mud — excellent holding but depths require scope. The Port Vila Yacht Club (Yachting Club of Vanuatu) manages moorings in the bay. Hideaway Island (Mele Bay), west of the main anchorage, offers shallower water and a quieter setting. Mele Bay is preferred in southerly conditions. Beware the significant current through the anchorage and pick up a mooring rather than anchoring if possible in busy periods.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
Port Vila is the principal Port of Entry for Vanuatu. Fly the Q flag and contact the harbour master on VHF Ch 16 on approach. Customs, Immigration, Biosecurity, and Health clearance must all be completed before going ashore. A cruising permit is required for travel beyond Efate — obtainable from the Vanuatu Maritime Authority. Duty-free fuel is available to visiting yachts on application.
