Destination: Noumea, New Caledonia
Introduction
Noumea, the capital of France's New Caledonia territory, is the most sophisticated and cosmopolitan port in the southwest Pacific. Set on a peninsula within a large, deep, and well-sheltered lagoon protected by the world's second-largest barrier reef, it combines French culture, cuisine, and infrastructure with a unique Kanak Melanesian heritage. It is a major provisioning and refit centre and a key waypoint on the Pacific cruising route.

Protected Anchorages
The main anchorages for visiting yachts are in Moselle Bay (Baie de la Moselle) in the heart of the city, or in the more sheltered Orphelinat Bay (Baie de l'Orphelinat) to the south. Both offer 5–10 m over mud and good holding. Port Moselle Marina in the heart of the city is the main marina facility. The inner harbour is well-sheltered from all directions by the surrounding peninsula and reefs.
Customs Protocols for Visiting Yachts
Noumea is the principal Port of Entry for New Caledonia. Contact the harbour master (Capitainerie) on VHF Ch 16. Customs (Douanes), Immigration (Police aux Frontières), and Biosecurity (DAVAR) clearance is required. DAVAR biosecurity is strict — declare all food, fresh produce, and biological material. France's customs regulations apply as a French overseas collectivity.
