Mahinepua Bay

Moderate holding in sandy bottom. Well sheltered in all but eastern
quadrant winds. Anchor in the middle of the bay as it gets too shallow
for most towards the head of the bay.

Rainbow Warrior

The wreck of the Greenpeace "Rainbow Warrior", marked by a yellow
buoy. The vessel was bombed by the French in 1985 killing one and was
sunk here to form an artificial reef as a memorial in 1987. The wreck
lies on sandy bottom with a maximum depth of 26 metres. It is covered
in bright jewel anemones and surrounded by blue maomao, mackerel,
snapper and kingfish. Sandagers and scarlet wrasses, combfish, pigfish
and golden snapper and octopus all inhabit the wreck.

Whangaihe Bay

Good holding on sand and shingle bottom in 3-4 metres of water. Good
shelter in all but northern quadrant winds.

Stephenson Island

This anchorage is sheltered in northwest, north and northeasterly
winds but can be fairly exposed otherwise and open to northwest
swells. The bottom is rocky with seaweed so lay your anchor carefully.
There is also another anchorage in the bay on the west side of the
island in 4 metres but beware of rocks in the bay itself.

Owhatanga Bay

Sheltered anchorages can be found here for most winds except
northwest. Good holding in broken shell, mud and sand and you can tuck
in close to shore around most of the bay. Great spot for sheltering in
strong winds.

Stephenson Island

Rock reef down to a sandy bottom, up to 35 metres deep. Rock lobster and a good variety of invertebrates, rock lobster and occasionally Spanish lobster can be found.

Touwai Bay

This anchorage has deep water close to shore - anchor close for better
shelter. Good holding on muddy sandy bottom. Exposed to southwest,
west and northwest winds. Beware of the 2.2m shallow when leaving the
bay heading southwest.

Waitapu Bay

Calm shallow anchorage with good holding in muddy sandy bottom. Very
sheltered, especially from southwest or northeast winds, exposed to
northwest.
